How Texas calculates child support
Texas uses a net resources method under Family Code §154. The court starts with gross income, subtracts taxes and FICA, caps the result at $9,200/month, then applies a percentage based on the number of children:
- 1 child — 20%
- 2 children — 25%
- 3 children — 30%
- 4 children — 35%
- 5+ children — 40%
If the obligor supports children from other relationships, the court uses an adjusted table (§154.129) that produces a lower percentage.
